Male Gamers are Not the Audience

There is the misconception that gamers are predominantly white males around their teenage years to mid-40s. When videogames have “unattractive” female characters, characters who aren’t white, or anything not in the realm of white and straight male gamers become very mad. They say it’s “anti-white” or “too woke” and are confused on why gaming companies don’t pander to male gamers. What male gamers don’t realize is that since the 2000s and the gaming industry becoming more popular, men do not make up the majority of gamers anymore. It’s more of a 50/50 between both genders among multiple different races as well.

Just like people are wanting to see representation in movies and TV shows, it’s important to show that in games as well. Some common criticisms male gamers have about advertising and games in general is that “gaming shouldn’t be political.” However, any type of art is political because it’s how people express themselves. On top of that, gamers themselves classify games as an art and art always includes politics. Since it’s hard to please male gamers it would be better to market towards female gamers instead.
