A lot of people claim a game has a “good story” without actually understanding why it works. Gaming narratives aren’t like movies, you’re not just watching events unfold, you’re participating in them. So if you want to break down a game’s story in a meaningful way, you need to look at more than just plot twists or emotional moments. You have to look at how the game uses its world, characters, and mechanics to actually tell the story.

1. Figure Out What the Game Is Actually About

4. Pay Attention to the World as a Narrative Tool

   1. What does this game world say about our current society and how conflict changes people?

5. Look at How the Story Is Told

   1. With games, you can tell stories any way you want. Cutscenes, dialogue, little easter eggs spread throughout the game.

6. Ask What Emotional Reaction the Game Wants

7. Consider Representation and Who the Story Speaks To

   1. The stories reflect the fandom and the people who are drawn to these stories.
